Jerez de la Frontera will host a historic boxing event on Saturday, April 11, at the Chapín Municipal Sports Palace, where Omar Khayati will become the city's first professional boxer in 45 years.
The Sports Delegate, Tomás Sampalo, accompanied by Antonio Navarro, a former Jerez boxer and manager of the Jerez Boxing Club, presented the event scheduled to start at 6:30 PM. The evening will feature a mixed card, highlighting the professional bout between Omar Khayati and Ángel Guédez, alongside seven amateur fights from the Andalusia Championship.
“
"This is not just another event because today we are presenting Omar Khayati's transition to professional boxing. Professionalism involves effort, an investment in time, money, and luck. Not all athletes manage to become professionals."
Sampalo emphasized Khayati's significance as a "tremendous testament to inclusion through sport," highlighting his discipline, values, and adaptation to a new society, overcoming adversity and fighting far from his family.
For his part, Antonio Navarro explained that the decision for Khayati to turn professional was due to the difficulty of finding opponents in the amateur category, where the boxer has won 17 of his 25 fights by KO. "No one wanted to fight him, and Omar was bored," Navarro stated.
“
"I never go into the ring without confidence. I train well to have confidence and enjoy myself in the ring. Jerez is my city. I have been working and training here for nine years."
Omar Khayati, of Maghrebi origin, arrived in Jerez after crossing the Strait, finding in boxing a path to social inclusion. Trained by the legendary Antonio Navarro, he now seeks to establish his career in national boxing after signing with the promoter Heredia Production.
