This academic gathering will bring together legal specialists to analyze the role of memory laws in societies marked by conflicts, dictatorships, and other forms of violence. The congress, organized within the framework of the University of Cádiz (UCA), will address the limits and possibilities of law in confronting historical trauma, guaranteeing the right to truth, and ensuring respect for victims.
The event aims to serve as a space for legal reflection on the construction of a common narrative of the past in democratic and pluralistic contexts. The central theme of this seventh edition will be “Memory Laws and Democratic Coexistence,” featuring invited presentations from national and international experts.
The organization has opened a call for papers, with abstracts of 500 to 1,000 words to be submitted by May 16, 2026. Accepted proposals will be announced by June 10, and full papers must be submitted by September 30.
The congress receives public funding, having been selected in the 2025 call for subsidies for activities related to the care and support of war and dictatorship victims, promoted by the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory. It is also sponsored by the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory and collaborates with the UCA Faculty of Law, the Social Council of the University of Cádiz, the Ibero-American University Association of Postgraduate Studies (AUIP), and the SEJ-320 Research Group.
Attendance at the event will be limited to 200 participants, and those interested in attending as public can register until October 31, 2026. With this academic event, the Jerez Campus reinforces its role as a venue for specialized legal meetings and a space for debate on issues related to democratic memory and the Rule of Law.
