The city has obtained certification for a total of 77 spaces, both public and private, distributed across rural and urban environments. This distinction, received by deputy mayor Susana Sánchez, recognizes the availability of a semi-automatic external defibrillator (AED) and personnel trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and equipment use.
The delegate for Health, Tomás Sampalo, highlighted the importance of this measure for survival in emergencies. He explained that in case of needing an AED, the first step is to call 112 or 061, and anyone can use the device by following its voice instructions while waiting for medical assistance.
The City Council's objective is to expand these zones so that defibrillation can be performed within 3 minutes, increasing survival rates to 70-75%. Among the spaces equipped with AEDs are the Central Municipal Library, the Manuel Mestre and José Laguillo Municipal Pool, the Claustros de Santo Domingo, and the Central Market.
In addition to municipal facilities such as stations, schools, and sports centers, other locations like shopping malls, gyms, hotels, and pharmacies often have AEDs, either by regulation or voluntarily. The City Council has trained its municipal staff in CPR and AED use and encourages citizens to take these courses.
