Since last Wednesday, Honduras Street has been closed to traffic for the execution of sanitation network works. This intervention, taking place near the San Carlos Wall, has significantly altered vehicular flow in Cádiz's historic center, eliminating the possibility of completely circling the area from the Alameda to Filipinas Square.
The traffic interruption prevents passage through the section connecting the Alameda with Avenida del Puerto, as the inner streets of the old town are mostly pedestrian. The main points affected by the closures, which are already causing congestion, are Argüelles Square and Hispanidad Square, near the old Comes station.
From these points, the ring road can only be used in one direction. From Argüelles, the route is towards Campo del Sur, passing through Alameda, Paseo Carlos III, Doctor Gómez Ulla, and Duque de Nájera. In the opposite direction, from Hispanidad Square, one can drive towards Puertas de Tierra via Avenida del Puerto and Cuestas de las Calesas.
Users of local garages still have access to their properties via alternative streets such as Conde O’Reilly, República el Salvador, Costa Rica, Avenida del Descubrimiento, Méjico, and San Carlos, in addition to the passable section of Honduras Street. The construction company has installed special signage in the affected streets and at Simón Bolívar Roundabout to inform drivers.
Urban transport line 2 has also been modified, as it cannot circulate on Honduras Street. The starting and ending stop for this line has been moved to the 'Alameda Clara Campoamor' stop, located near Argüelles Square, next to Isabel la Católica Street.
These works are part of a project by Aguas de Cádiz to improve and digitize the sanitation network, aiming to modernize the management of the integral water cycle through new technologies. The project is funded by European Next Generation funds. Unlike previous interventions, it has not been possible to phase the works on this occasion, leading to the total closure of the roadway in the affected section.
