Another classic establishment in Cádiz's old town bids farewell. Maype confectionery, known for its tradition and artisanal products, will cease operations at its premises on Periodista Emilio López street. The news, communicated via social media, has saddened its regular customers.
The current managers, who took over in October 2022, explained that despite their efforts to maintain the business's essence, the economic reality has made its continuation unsustainable. Operating costs, with rent being the main factor, have become unmanageable for a small business.
“"After much thought, with sadness but also with much gratitude, we want to inform you that we are forced to turn off the lights of our confectionery and also the oven of our workshop, which has seen so many dreams and sweets born."
The couple of owners, who took the reins after the death of the previous owner, a master pastry chef, expressed their hope that Maype's story does not end here and that, in the future, new management may reopen its doors and continue the tradition.
Founded in 1983 by Manoli Rodríguez and Pepe Pérez, Maype began its journey as a candy store on Columela street before settling in Las Flores square and, finally, at its current location. The establishment has been a meeting point and a reference for many families in Cádiz over the years.
