Although without definitive dates or secured funding, the municipal government has reaffirmed its intention to restore the deteriorated facades of the Gran Teatro Falla. Municipal sources indicate that initial steps are already underway for this intervention, described as "very sensitive" and requiring great respect for the building.
Technicians from the Urban Planning department have contacted various specialized companies to assess how to approach the work. The last comprehensive renovation of the theater, carried out 35 years ago, included the restoration of the neo-Arabic brickwork on the facade, a distinctive feature of the coliseum located in Fragela Square.
“"This is a very sensitive intervention that must be approached with great respect for the building."
The original brick, which was preserved in the better-conditioned areas during the previous intervention, has suffered significant deterioration in recent years due to the city's saline humidity. Therefore, the application of a mortar similar to the one used previously, which has shown good resistance, is being considered, although the final technical decision has not yet been made.
These works, focusing solely on the exterior of the building, will not require the closure of the Teatro Falla, thus avoiding the suspension or relocation of its programming, including the Official Carnival Groups Contest. The rehabilitation is part of the Falla Year, which in 2026 commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Cádiz composer, although the exterior restoration is anticipated for 2027.
Funding for this project, estimated at 1.5 million euros nine months ago, is still being managed. This amount was expected to come from a 6 million euro municipal loan that the City Council planned to request. The Gran Teatro Falla, as the main facility dedicated to Manuel de Falla in the city, holds a high degree of heritage protection, making this intervention necessary and timely in the context of the Falla Year celebrations.
