The 25/26 season in the Second Division has concluded, and AD Ceuta has been one of the standout teams. Led in sporting direction by Jerez-native Edu Villegas and from the bench by José Juan Romero, the Ceuta club has managed to finish mid-table with 61 points, surpassing the objective of remaining in the silver category in their return. They have finished ahead of historic clubs like Cádiz, Valladolid, Albacete, and the relegated Zaragoza, clubs with larger budgets and fan bases.
The outstanding work of both coaches has not gone unnoticed, placing them in the sights of clubs from both the First and Second Divisions. Villegas, who hung up his boots as a player in 2017 at Xerez DFC, has rapidly climbed the ranks in professional football, moving from sporting director to being on the verge of the First Division, a dream he couldn't fulfill as a player.
After developing in the youth academy of Xerez CD and having a long career as a goalkeeper in the Third and Second B divisions, Villegas was 'asked to leave' Xerez DFC after achieving promotion to Segunda RFEF. Now, he sits at the table with the best in professional football. At Ceuta, Luahay Hamido trusted him, providing the necessary resources for the club to go from Segunda RFEF to consolidating in Segunda A within five seasons, achieving two promotions (Primera RFEF and LaLiga Hypermotion).
Amidst rumors linking him to clubs like Leganés or Valladolid, Ceuta convinced him to renew his contract and that of his work team until 2028. The entity aims to maintain the growth that has led them to achieve unexpected heights. Each season, Villegas has had to rebuild the squad, replacing key player departures such as Youness (heading to Oviedo) and Rubén Díez (to Zaragoza). He has been instrumental in discovering talents like Uche (Getafe), Sixtus (Osasuna), or Efe (Cádiz).
