The city of Chiclana becomes the setting for the exhibition ‘Women Legends of Sport’, a display celebrating the achievements and resilience of female athletes throughout history. Organized by the Sports Department of the Chiclana City Council, in collaboration with the Sports Museum Association and the High Council for Sports, the initiative is part of the commemorative events for the 150th anniversary of the city's title conferral.
The exhibition, open to the public until June 27th at the Pabellón Ciudad de Chiclana, features nearly 70 emblematic objects. Uniforms, memorabilia, and symbolic pieces narrate the evolution of women's sports and the obstacles overcome by its protagonists. This marks the first time the exhibition visits the province of Cádiz.
Renowned national and international figures such as Theresa Zabell, Lydia Valentín, Ruth Beitia, Alexia Putellas, Amaya Valdemoro, Mercedes Coghen, Yelena Isinbayeva, and Nadia Comaneci are remembered through their careers. However, the exhibition also dedicates a prominent space to local athletes, recognizing women, clubs, and groups that have promoted sports in the city.
Among the local honorees are pioneers like Silvia Castillo, a key figure in the early days of rhythmic gymnastics and aerobics in Chiclana. Cristina Vera, distinguished in athletics, cycling, duathlon, and triathlon, and the only athlete from the city to win the Chiclana Triathlon in its 39 editions, is also recognized. Carmen Gómez, known as Meluki, is honored for her career as a local sports institution.
Cycling has a notable presence with Vanessa Flores, champion of Spain and Andalucía, and Xary Rodríguez, a former professional cyclist. Adaptive sports are highlighted through Irene Saborido, with a distinguished career in various disciplines. Other figures such as Marina Saucedo in volleyball, Noe Reyes in futsal, Patricia Sánchez in water polo, and Elena Martí in her respective sport, are also part of the exhibition.
Women's basketball is represented by Irene Rivera, while clubs like Club Baloncesto Ituci, Club Gimnasia Chiclana, and Club Deportivo Juventud Chiclana are recognized for their achievements and for paving the way for women's sports. The exhibition also highlights the Dragon Boat team from the Club Piragüismo Chiclana and the Pink Arrows from Club Arquero Chiclana, groups of women who have found sport as a tool for self-improvement.
Other honored athletes include Marian Ruiz in field hockey, Victoria Caballero in table tennis, Amanda Vázquez, Marta Garat in water sports, and Carolina de Pando in fencing. The contribution of María José Díaz to aerobics and other disciplines, M.ª Carmen Peralta in athletics, Cristina Ruiz in boxing, and M.ª Carmen Rodríguez in various aspects of sport are also featured.
Weightlifting is represented by Lidia de Gomar, and refereeing by Montse Solórzano. Women's karate features Ana Rocío Butrón and Erika Benavides, and the precursors of paddle tennis are remembered. A moving tribute is paid to Papa Rodríguez and the members of ‘La Furia Chiclanera’, pioneers of women's football in the city.
The exhibition also looks to the future with three young promising athletes: Amanda Román in athletics, Isabel Díaz in equestrianism, and Fiona Wulf Ullner in sailing, who already compete nationally and internationally, symbolizing the generational handover.
Beyond their successes, the exhibition underscores the historical difficulties many women faced in practicing sports, from needing parental authorization to enduring derogatory nicknames or receiving inadequate recognition. These stories of overcoming adversity are part of the collective memory and find in the exhibition a space for recognition and homage.
