The 'Diaries of Distinguished Volunteers', belonging to the Line Infantry Regiment, contain daily entries from military commanders between April 1810 and October 1811. These volumes, recently acquired and restored, reflect the routine of military units and specific episodes of life during the siege.
The Archive's head, Santiago Saborido, highlighted the testimonial value of these manuscripts, noting the potential uniqueness of similar examples. Historian Helios González de la Flor emphasized how their incorporation into the Archive will enhance research on the War of Independence in the region.
The special program is part of International Archives Week, themed '#Archives for Justice', aiming to promote the role of these institutions as guardians of documentary memory and access to information.
The objective is to bring the documentary collections and the work carried out by the center closer to the public.
In addition to the exhibition, theatrical tours are scheduled for June 9th and 10th, guided by actors who will lead visitors through the Casa de las Cadenas, the Archive's headquarters, explaining its operations and services. These tours, with limited capacity and prior registration, will include a visit to the Mirador Tower with materials on Cadiz's trade.
On June 11th and 13th, the photographic scavenger hunt 'Cádiz, how have you changed?' will take place, comparing historical images from the Garófano Collection with the current state of the city's various spaces, combining historical dissemination and basic photography notions. On June 12th, the activity 'Archaeology and its institutionalization process in Cádiz' will address written documentation of discoveries and looting in the 19th century.
The territorial delegate for Culture and Sport, Tania Barcelona, visited the Archive for the start of these activities, which are open to the public and designed to introduce citizens to the documentary collections and the center's work.
