Given its size, the city of Cádiz prioritizes public transport and sustainable mobility options. Traversing the capital from end to end, from Cortadura to San Juan de Dios, can take just over an hour on foot, less than half an hour by urban bus, and about 20 minutes by bicycle or electric scooter, thanks to the expanding network of bike lanes.
These green-colored sections, which have become a key infrastructure in the city, are increasingly respected by pedestrians. They understand the importance of not encroaching on these exclusive paths to avoid collisions with bicycles and electric scooters. The network has grown to over 20 kilometers, with the latest extensions completed a few years ago.
Among the most recent additions are over 10 kilometers connecting Sanidad Pública Avenue with Huelva Avenue, Descubrimiento Avenue, and the Bahía Avenue promenade. Additionally, a nearly one-kilometer section was added inside the Port of Cádiz dock during the pandemic, and in 2023, the city's first bike lane, located on both sidewalks of the current Sanidad Pública Avenue, was renovated.
“"The Paseo Marítimo has a very good layout; I love riding here, and it's truly a joy."
Despite the generally positive assessment, users express the need for improvements. An electric scooter user who rides along the Paseo Marítimo, one of the most frequented routes, highlights the quality of this section but points out deficiencies in the Old Town, where the lane is not always painted green and overlaps with older routes. Another user, who commutes to work by scooter, emphasizes the need for greater public awareness, as pedestrians are still seen encroaching on the green zones, and suggests improvements in the Zona Franca section.
“"The bike lane is good, but there needs to be more public awareness, as we still see people walking in the green zone as if it were nothing."
A bicycle user, who laments the narrowness of the Old Town streets for bike lane implementation, misses the fulfillment of electoral promises regarding the creation of bicycle rental companies, similar to those in other cities. She also calls for better maintenance of existing sections, as some show cracks or the green paint is fading.
