The accused, who was a passenger in a vehicle that tested positive for alcohol, offered a wad of 50-euro bills to one of the officers on three separate occasions. His intention was for the Civil Guards to 'forget about everything' and not process the official report.
The incident occurred around 8:15 AM on the morning of March 9, 2025, during a preventive alcohol and drug check set up by the Civil Guard's Traffic Sub-sector at the exit of the capital of Cádiz, coinciding with Carnival celebrations. The checkpoint was properly marked, and the officers were in uniform.
“"I would give you 1,000 euros so you forget about everything"
The Civil Guard warned the passenger about the potential illegality of his actions, but he persisted with his offer. He was ultimately reported for a bribery offense. The Prosecutor's Office had initially sought a sentence of four and a half years in prison.
The trial was scheduled for this Thursday but was resolved through a plea agreement. The court took into account the accused's confession and his state of intoxication at the time of the events. Consequently, the sentence has been reduced to two years in prison and a fine of 1,080 euros. The agreement stipulates that the accused will not have to serve jail time provided he commits no further offenses during this period.
