The meeting, held at the Visitor Center of the Los Toruños Metropolitan Park, served as a forum to analyze the renaturalization of coastal areas. The initiative aims to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis and preserve biodiversity in one of Andalusia's most iconic natural environments.
The event included the participation of various stakeholders, ranging from the Regional Government of Andalusia and the Provincial Council of Cadiz to representatives from the aquaculture and salt production sectors. The main goal was to establish management strategies that achieve a balance between environmental conservation, economic development, and the protection of the area's cultural heritage.
Among the conclusions reached, participants highlighted the need to restore degraded areas and promote sustainable models based on traditional salt farming and extensive aquaculture. These activities, beyond their economic value, are fundamental pillars of the landscape identity of the Bay of Cadiz.
This laboratory, coordinated by research groups from the UCA, will serve as a model for other case studies in Europe within the Rewrite project, which includes 25 institutions from 14 countries. The preliminary results, presented alongside the Institute of Marine Sciences of Andalusia (ICMAN-CSIC), will be part of a technical report aimed at guiding administrations in the sustainable management of the territory.
