On the morning of April 2nd last year, residents of the Puerto de Palos neighborhood in San Fernando experienced tense moments due to the presence of a man armed with a pistol. The suspect, carrying a prohibited weapon without a license, fired shots near the Bahía Sur shopping center and fled to the aforementioned neighborhood. After entering a neighbor's house and barricading himself, he attempted to escape while pointing his weapon at Local and National Police officers who cornered him, according to the prosecution's account.
The indictment details that the accused, who lacked a license for the Ekol, model Firat Magnum pistol, fired shots into the air. Upon noticing the police presence, he fled towards Puerto de Palos street, entering one residence and then another, where he threatened the occupants. After about 15 minutes, the residents managed to escape and sought police assistance.
Once surrounded by the police cordon, the individual continued his foot chase along Puerto de Palos street, ignoring commands to stop. In his escape attempt, he pointed his weapon at the officers and fired a shot into the air. The pursuit continued to Moguer street, where National Police officers joined, whom he also threatened with the weapon.
Finally, the man threw the weapon to the ground and was subdued by the acting police officers, despite throwing punches. The prosecution charges him with crimes including assault with a dangerous instrument, illegal possession of weapons, home invasion, unlawful detention, and lesiones, requesting a total sentence of 13 years in prison and a fine of 6,480 euros. One officer suffered injuries for which compensation of 640 euros is requested.
The accused, who is in provisional detention and also had an arrest warrant for two robberies in Málaga, is expected to be tried by a jury at the Palace of Justice in Cádiz. The trial date has not yet been set.
