A few kilometers from the Bahía Sur football stadium, the new athletics stadium is being built, a complementary and necessary work for the continuity of sports practice in the town. The construction of the football stadium, known as 'Isla de León', involves the removal of existing athletics tracks to bring the field closer to the stands and free up land for a shopping gallery.
The San Fernando City Council has reported on the good pace of work at the Huerta de la Compañía site, sharing images showing the progress, where the tracks are already discernible and some lighting towers have been installed. The works, which began almost a year ago, had a 12-month execution period, although a completion date has not yet been specified.
Last May, the City Council indicated that the work was 40% complete. Initial timelines were affected by the impact of winter storms and "archaeological conditions" in a sensitive area with relevant findings. Despite this, the municipal government maintained that the work was proceeding at an "adequate pace".
The first phase of the new athletics stadium represents an investment of 3,373,925.97 euros. A future second intervention is planned, which has yet to be tendered, but the idea is for the facilities to be usable before its completion. To this end, the Council plans to install high-quality modular units for restrooms, changing rooms, and storage, for which it allocated 190,000 euros following a credit modification in the May plenary session.
The City Council is considering several proposals for the naming of the new stadium, which will be agreed upon with the clubs. However, the name 'Estadio Iberoamericano', previously used for the Bahía Sur facilities in reference to the XIV Ibero-American Athletics Championships held for the Bicentennial of the 1810 Courts, will not be retained.
