The initiative stems from a motion presented by the AxSí party, aiming to address the growing difficulty in parking in various city areas. The proposal, approved in the municipal plenary session, suggests management by municipal controllers to prioritize residents over non-resident vehicles.
AxSí's co-spokesperson, Lolo Picardo, advocated for the motion, highlighting the benefits of a free orange zone for residents. He cited the areas around the Camposoto Barracks and the Tercio de la Armada as critical examples, where the influx of military personnel and visitors significantly reduces parking space for locals. The issue also affects neighborhoods near San Carlos Hospital.
From the governing team, the Councilor for Urban Planning and Management, José Luis Cordero, acknowledged the problem and assured that solutions are being sought, including the creation of new parking areas. He mentioned recent actions such as the development of a parking lot at the Camposoto Barracks and the awarding of works for another lot near the Camposoto health center.
The opposition presented varied viewpoints. Popular Party councilor María del Carmen García de Lomas expressed doubts about the government's genuine intention to analyze alternatives like the orange zone, referencing past management of the blue zone. Meanwhile, the VOX group spokesperson described the orange zone measure as 'reasonable, intelligent, and not arbitrary, as it requires technical and participatory justifications'.
AxSí emphasized the importance of reaching consensus with neighborhood associations and affected parties before implementing these measures.
