Camposoto beach in San Fernando will become a prime location for observing the partial solar eclipse on August 12. This astronomical phenomenon, serving as a prelude to the total eclipse planned for 2027, is being prepared by the San Fernando City Council with a special deployment.
The Councilor for Culture, Pepa Pacheco, has led coordination meetings with entities such as the Fundación Descubre, the University of Cádiz, and the Astronomical Association of San Fernando. The goal is to plan both this year's eclipse observation and activities related to the 'Eclipse Trio', an exceptional sequence of solar eclipses.
The potential of San Fernando as an observation point for the 2027 total eclipse, an event of international scope, is highlighted. The partial eclipse on August 12 will allow viewers in the Bay of Cádiz to see the Moon obscure over 90% of the solar disk, creating a unique sunset image.
Pepa Pacheco stated that this eclipse will serve as a 'rehearsal' for the 2027 event, offering an opportunity to prepare citizens to enjoy these phenomena safely and position San Fernando as a leader in astronomical outreach, leveraging its historical connection to astronomy and the presence of the Royal Observatory of the Navy.
Camposoto beach is ideal due to its wide, clear western horizon. The phenomenon will begin at 7:43 PM, reach its maximum at 8:39 PM, and conclude with the sunset scheduled for 9:19 PM.
To facilitate access, the City Council will reinforce bus services to Camposoto, extending their operating hours until 10:00 PM.
The importance of using certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2 standard) for eye protection is reminded, with homemade methods being discouraged. For binoculars or telescopes, certified solar filters must be installed on the objective lens. Indirect observation methods like pinhole cameras or projection are recommended.
High attendance is expected, and visitors are advised to plan their travel, avoid parking on road shoulders, and respect Camposoto's natural environment by preventing fires and using sun protection.
