The two main neighborhood federations of San Fernando, Isla de León and Esteros y Salinas, have reiterated to the mayor, Patricia Cavada, the importance of bringing back the Neighborhood Police. In recent meetings, attended also by the Councilor for Citizen Participation, Javier Navarro, the government team committed to preparing a formal proposal for the service's return, which will be presented to the neighborhood organizations in the coming days. Both parties had already held informal discussions on this possibility.
The Neighborhood Police operated in San Fernando from 2015 to 2024. Its discontinuation occurred when the eight officers who comprised it were reassigned to bolster the general shifts of the Local Police. This decision generated controversy, drawing criticism from both the political opposition and police unions, who lamented the loss of a service close to the community.
This police force had earned the affection of residents for its close, educational, and friendly approach. Its duties included traffic control during school drop-offs and pick-ups, neighborhood meetings to understand citizen concerns firsthand, and support in resolving private conflicts. Therefore, its potential return is seen as good news for many residents who value this more accessible form of public service.
During the meetings, Mayor Cavada also provided updates on various strategic projects and ongoing urban improvements. These included the progress of the La Magdalena Metropolitan Park works, the enhancement of public lighting with a new 14 million euro contract, the commencement of construction for the future summer swimming pool, and the creation of a new green area at the entrance to La Casería. Specific actions in neighborhoods such as María Zambrano, the completion of the Plaza del Merendero, and urban maintenance tasks in areas like Las Palmeras, El Boquete, and the vicinity of San Romualdo Castle were also discussed.
