Among the highlighted initiatives are a naval baptism for young students, a moving tribute to those who served and passed away on the historic vessel, a regatta concluding in front of the training ship, and the opportunity for islanders to sail a section of the journey from San Fernando to Cádiz. Additionally, a civil flag oath is proposed at the pier of the old La Carraca Arsenal, with the Elcano as a backdrop, or alternatively in the Plaza del Rey.
The platform, which brings together nearly 40 local entities, was recently established with the aim of involving the city of San Fernando in the commemorative events for the centenary of the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, scheduled for 2027. The initial meeting in La Carraca sought to present the collective's objectives and planned activities, especially those requiring the collaboration of the Spanish Navy as they will take place in military facilities.
“"The collaboration from the Navy will be total, as we are aware of the great historical relationship that the training ship has always had with the city of San Fernando, which is once again reflected in the creation of this platform."
Admiral Pool expressed a "magnificent reception" to the proposals, emphasizing the ship's historical connection with San Fernando. He also offered his support to the platform to facilitate necessary procedures with the anniversary's organizing committee, which reports directly to the AJEMA (Admiral Chief of Staff of the Navy), and made the old Arsenal's facilities available for the 'La Isla y Elcano' program of events. The Spanish Radio Amateurs Union (URE), through its Regional Section, will also contribute with dissemination activities, following its participation in previous anniversaries.
Also present at the meeting was Captain González Serrano, a member of the Elcano centenary monitoring committee, who highlighted the alignment of working lines between the Navy and the platform, ensuring their active participation. The platform described the meeting as "very positive" and expressed gratitude for Admiral Pool's willingness, anticipating future coordination meetings to monitor the ongoing actions.
