The visit is part of the commemoration of World Alzheimer's Day, celebrated on September 21st under the slogan ‘'NO' is no longer the answer’. The association's president, Regla Periñán, led the entity's representation.
José María Román highlighted the “great work that La Aurora does”, stating that since its inception it has marked a before and after in the city. He also emphasized the effort of family members in improving the quality of life for those affected by the illness.
The mayor stressed the strength of the local associative fabric in addressing social issues such as lack of inclusion and isolation, assuring that the care provided by centers, families, and professionals contributes to the happiness of both patients and families.
“"It is growing more and more. It has more staff, and we are confident that we can expand places to be able to assist more people and families who need it."
Regla Periñán thanked the City Council and other public administrations for their support, expressing pride in the growth of the La Aurora center and her hope to expand its capacity.
“"We need a response to the funding of medications that help slow the disease to lessen the family burden. Furthermore, we need people to be diagnosed as soon as possible so they can receive the care they need."
A nurse from the center, Libia Pérez, explained that the slogan addresses the families' need for more centers and funding for medications that slow the disease, thereby reducing the family burden. She also stressed the urgency of early diagnoses.
World Alzheimer's Day is commemorated every September 21st since 1994, a date established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Its aim is to inform society, reduce stigma, and advocate for more support for research and patients. Since 2012, September has been dedicated to global awareness campaigns.
