This joint initiative's main objective is to urge state and regional administrations, with the support of the Bay's city councils, the business sector, the UCA, the ICMAN, CTAQUA, and other involved social agents, to develop and implement a comprehensive plan. This plan will address marshland restoration, wetland defense against climate change and sea-level rise, and the improvement of conditions for aquaculture, salt production, and nature tourism.
“"This would prevent marshlands and estuaries from becoming dust bowls, which are only flooded by very high tides. This causes the loss of all productive capacity, biodiversity, and biomass generated in this highly biologically productive area."
The mayor of Chiclana has expressed his full support for this proposal, emphasizing the need for both the Junta de Andalucía and the State to invest in the marshlands and estuaries of the Natural Park to increase wetlands. He also pointed out the availability of significant European funds that could be allocated for this purpose, highlighting the environmental, aquaculture, tourism, and climate change mitigation value of these spaces.
From the Blue Bay Alliance Platform, a spokesperson has thanked Chiclana City Council for its support, stressing that the marshlands and estuaries of the Bay of Cádiz are in a critical situation. He called on administrations to act urgently and implement a shock treatment to alleviate the situation and prevent the disappearance of these vital ecosystems, identifying climate change and sea-level rise as the biggest challenges.
The municipality of Chiclana, with a significant area of salt flats under municipal ownership and expansion plans, shows a particular interest in the conservation of these environments. This aims to enhance the value of the marshland and its channels, such as Sancti Petri or Pan de Mis Hijos, for the enjoyment of citizens.
