The Spanish Troop and Navy Association (ATME) has reported a bed bug infestation at the CEFOT-2 facilities in San Fernando, prompting the Ministry of Defence to evacuate students. Military training will now be conducted remotely while the situation is addressed.
According to information provided to ATME by relatives of those affected, the infestation caused discomfort, hygiene issues, and potential health risks for the personnel undergoing training, particularly in accommodation and rest areas. The association warns about the rapid spread of such pests and their impact on habitability conditions.
We hope to clarify the scope of the situation and the measures being taken to address the problem.
ATME has requested explanations from the Ministry of Defence regarding the affected areas, any health incidents such as bites or allergic reactions, and medical attention provided. They also seek details on disinsection efforts, follow-up plans, and communication protocols.
The association has also inquired about similar past incidents and questioned the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, about the image of modernity being presented to young Spaniards and the investment in facility improvements.
For its part, Defence has stated that work is underway to establish a new temporary accommodation facility for affected personnel and to carry out cleaning, disinfection, and rehabilitation of the affected premises, with the collaboration of the Army's medical staff and a specialized pest control company.
