The mayor of Jaén, Julio Millán, accompanied by the Councilor for Urban Maintenance, Javier Padorno, and the Councilor for Employment and IMEFE, Luis García Millán, visited the Plaza de Las Sufragistas to oversee the progress of the works. The intervention, requested by residents, includes the participation of the president of the neighborhood association Passo, Román Barranco, and municipal technicians.
This municipal project, funded internally, addresses a long-standing issue affecting the daily life of the area. The mayor emphasized the need for intervention to correct damage caused by ground movements and improve the square's usability through a complete pavement renewal.
Current work focuses on demolishing the existing pavement, the deterioration of which has led to subsidences and deformations. According to the Councilor for Urban Maintenance, Javier Padorno, the poor condition of the pavement is mainly due to the passage of time and the effects of rain on the ground, particularly in this lower area of the Polígono del Valle, characterized by expansive clays.
The project, defined since September of last year, includes the removal and replacement of the deteriorated pavement, soil compaction, and the laying of a sub-base layer finished with stamped concrete. This solution facilitates execution, maintenance, and repair of the pavement.
The intervention also involves dismantling and repairing urban furniture, installing pergolas, and incorporating an irrigation system for the flowerbeds. Residents and pedestrians have been asked for their understanding, and alternative routes are recommended for travel to and from the University of Jaén.
This project is part of the urban improvement initiatives planned by the City Council in the vicinity of the Polígono del Valle, which include new interventions on various streets through the Asphalting Plan, improvements in local educational centers, and the construction of a parking lot next to the Sebastián Barajas sports center.
