The City Council of Martos has announced that the Maestro Álvarez Alonso Municipal Theater will host two productions from the prestigious International Classical Theatre Festival of Mérida: “Fedra, en los infiernos” and “Jasón y las Furias”.

The town of Martos is joining the program of the International Classical Theatre Festival of Mérida, one of Spain's most important theatrical events. The Maestro Álvarez Alonso Municipal Theater will host two notable productions in the coming months.
The first play will be “Fedra, en los infiernos” (Fedra, in Hell), a premiere from the 72nd edition of the Mérida festival. This contemporary reinterpretation of the classic myth, written and directed by José María del Castillo, stars Lydia Bosch in the lead role, alongside Julio Peña, Alejandro Albarracín, Marta Calvó, Antonio Albella, Eva Diago, and Yaiza Marcos. The production blends tragedy, music, humor, and a powerful visual concept.
The mayor of Martos, Emilio Torres, highlighted the significance of bringing this production to the city shortly after its run in Mérida. "Our theater is celebrating twenty years, and the best way to mark it is by filling it with audiences and bringing great shows here," he stated.
Subsequently, “Jasón y las Furias” (Jason and the Furies) will be presented, written by Nando López and directed by Antonio C. Guijosa, starring José Vicente Moirón. This production, which closed the 71st edition of the festival in August 2025, revisits the myth of Jason and Medea, focusing on guilt and the consequences of decisions made.
Torres noted that the arrival of these productions underscores Martos' cultural progress. "We want the public from Martos, but also from Jaén and other nearby municipalities, to look at our program and find reasons to come to the theater," he added.
These two plays are part of a broader program that will feature over twenty performances of theater, comedy, music, and family shows until the end of the season. Among the invited artists is Manu Sánchez, and a musical show inspired by the world of Harry Potter will also be presented.
The City Council aims to establish Martos as a cultural hub and a destination for enjoying performing arts. "When we talk about making Martos a cultural benchmark, we're not talking about a label," the mayor affirmed. "We're talking about programming, audiences, and keeping a theater open year-round."
The programming takes on special significance in 2026, marking the twentieth anniversary of the inauguration of the Maestro Álvarez Alonso Municipal Theater on February 17, 2006. The venue is celebrating its anniversary with an enhanced program throughout the year.
Mayor Emilio Torres emphasized that "a theater makes sense when things happen inside it." He celebrated that the Maestro Álvarez Alonso continues to be "a house full of life, with audiences, local and provincial companies and talent, and a program that allows Martos to occupy its own place on the cultural map of the province and Andalusia."
