“"In an increasingly authenticity and sustainability-oriented tourism landscape, the Water Race stands as an example of how a local tradition can project itself outwards without losing its identity. Its evolution, institutional recognition, and growing projection reinforce its role as one of Southern Europe's most unique events and a strategic asset for Lanjarón's tourism development."

The Water Race of Lanjarón, in the Granada Alpujarra, has become a major tourist attraction, recognized as a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia since 2018.
This unique event, held every June 24, has its roots in ancient popular beliefs linked to the night of San Juan. What began as a spontaneous game among neighbors, throwing water from balconies and fountains, has evolved into a cultural and tourist benchmark for the region.
The tradition, institutionalized in 1980, has maintained its participatory nature and authenticity, projecting Lanjarón's identity nationally and internationally. The symbolism of water, associated with purification, health, and renewal, is the central theme of this festivity.
Unlike other activities, the Water Race is not solely designed to attract visitors, but is a celebration by the residents themselves, open to anyone who wishes to participate. The inhabitants of Lanjarón, colloquially known as “cañoneros,” organize numerous parallel activities to enrich this festivity, which gains more followers each year.
