Human skeletal remains left unclaimed in the Almería cemetery, after burial concessions expired without being claimed, will gain a new life with high social and scientific value. The City Council of the Almerian capital has formalized the four-year extension of the collaboration agreement with the University of Almería (UAL) and the funeral company ASV Funerser, ensuring the regulated transfer of this osteological material to the academic institution.
This agreement, which will extend until 2030, has a strictly educational and scientific purpose. It allows skeletons that would otherwise end up in the common ossuary to become an invaluable resource for training future healthcare professionals at the La Cañada campus.
The availability of real osteological material represents a significant academic advantage. Students in the Medicine and Nursing degrees will be able to conduct their anatomy practicals with real specimens, enabling them to more accurately understand anatomical reliefs, vascular foramina, and subtle structural differences between bodies, which artificial plastic models fail to replicate.
Furthermore, the flow of these skeletal remains will enrich the research laboratories at the UAL. Specialized teams are developing projects in forensic anthropology and human identification techniques, providing the province with a reference scientific archive.
