Two political candidacies for the upcoming Andalusian regional elections are scheduled to visit Pavía Square in Almería next week to directly address the concerns of merchants and residents regarding the lack of progress on the promised redevelopment of the market and its surroundings.
The Pavía Square Merchants Association has decided to publicly reactivate its demands due to the absence of concrete guarantees regarding the market's redevelopment and its vicinity. They have announced a series of meetings with the candidacies participating in the Andalusian elections on May 17.
Merchants recall that in 2024 they showed patience after an agreement with the City Council that included partial improvements, such as the installation of awnings in the central aisle, enhancement of the market's image, and review of closed stalls. However, the most significant intervention, a comprehensive redevelopment to dignify the square and connect the market with the area's heritage and tourist value, has yet to materialize.
As part of this series of visits, a representative from the PSOE of Almería, accompanied by other members of their candidacy, will visit Pavía Square next Tuesday, April 28. Subsequently, on Thursday, April 30, representatives from the Por Andalucía coalition, along with other members, will visit the square to meet with merchants and residents and understand the collective's "desperate" situation firsthand.
The association emphasizes that these meetings are open to all candidacies. They highlight the importance of Pavía Square as the "most Almerian neighborhood," a connecting point for the neighborhoods surrounding the Alcazaba and the origin of Almería, in contrast to the Paseo de Almería, which, according to them, monopolizes most of the investment. They conclude that if dignity is restored to this area, it could become a "true beacon" for an Almería with identity.
