Councillor Catalina García visited the facilities this Monday, highlighting the importance of these actions to bring the sites into compliance with environmental regulations. The works in Albox, covering an area of 66,437.29 square meters, cost 2,657,806 euros, co-financed by the Feder Andalucía 2021-2027 program.
“"We have acted on a space that presented uncontrolled dumping, with the aim of adapting it to the environmental and safety conditions required by state and European regulations."
The works in Albox, completed on March 13, lasted over thirteen months and were carried out by the company Rialsa Obras. They focused on the closure and sealing of inert waste, including cleaning, conditioning, placement of sealing layers, and regulation of runoff water drainage. Rockfall walls were also built, and the perimeter was delimited to prevent unauthorized access.
The Albox project involved significant earthworks, with an excavation volume of 135,218.29 cubic meters and an embankment volume of 102,302 cubic meters, which allowed for the regularization of surfaces and the stabilization of existing slopes. Additionally, a specific waste management study was conducted for the treatment of materials generated during the construction.
After sealing, environmental integration of the area was carried out through revegetation with 40,630 plantings of native species such as broom (Retama sphaerocarpa), esparto grass (Lygeum spartum), and common esparto (Stipa tenacissima). The Albox City Council will undertake an environmental monitoring and control plan for at least 30 years.
In Líjar, the intervention covered 13,122.41 square meters at a cost of 713,428 euros, also with European co-financing. This landfill, located west of the urban center, accumulated construction waste, plant debris, and quarry materials. The works, carried out by Transformaciones y Embalses Parra, S.L., lasted six and a half months, between July 2025 and January 2026.
By the end of March this year, the Líjar facilities were handed over to the Líjar City Council for monitoring and maintenance. Various authorities attended the inspection visits, including Sergio Arjona, Deputy Councillor for Sustainability and Environment, and Manuel de la Torre, territorial delegate in Almería.
