Following the devastating forest fire that has ravaged nearly 7,000 hectares in the Levante almeriense region, hope for finding life now rests on the animals that managed to survive the flames. Dozens of volunteers, canine guides, and members of associations like Furia Almería and Eleos, coordinated with the Guardia Civil and other emergency teams, have accessed affected areas to search for and assist these animals.
In their efforts, the teams left containers with water and food at various points along the route amidst the blackened tree trunks and ash-reduced vegetation. This gesture is crucial for animals that are disoriented, hidden, or weakened by the heat and smoke.
Amidst the devastation, that reunion became one of the images that brought back some hope to a day marked by tragedy.
The first reward came with the reunion of two dogs with their family amidst the scorched landscape. A cat injured by being run over was also located and transferred for veterinary care, and calls about animals isolated in nearby homes were attended to.
The operation, which has assisted dozens of animals, highlights the silent work of volunteers and animal protection associations, who are considered heroes and survivors. A reception and transport network has been organized to care for any affected species, with a notable citizen response offering temporary foster homes and donations.
The organizations expressed gratitude for the coordination with Emergencies 112 Andalucía, Civil Protection, Firefighters, Guardia Civil, Seprona, police forces, and volunteers. These efforts demonstrate that even amidst the ashes, it is still possible to find life.
