An opposition representative in Almería has accused the president of the Junta de Andalucía of negligence in the execution of water projects under its jurisdiction. According to their statements, this lack of action is causing the province to suffer from water scarcity, which in turn limits its development and opportunities.
These statements were made during a visit to the storage and regulation ponds that the central Government is building in the Levante Almeriense. These infrastructures benefit more than 2,500 irrigators from the Community of Water Users of the Níjar Region (CUCN), and the representative highlighted the state investment in contrast to the perceived inaction of the regional government.
“"The announced "water revolution" by the regional governing party has not translated into the execution of committed works."
Among the missing actions, the expansion of the Almería desalination plant with a direct sea intake system is mentioned, considered crucial to reduce pressure on the aquifers of the Almerian plain. Criticism was also directed at the failure to carry out the expansions of the wastewater treatment plants in Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido, and Adra, despite being included in a 2021 agreement, and the persistence of significant losses in the distribution network of the Levante Almeriense.
It has been pointed out that the current management has prevented the claim of more than 25 cubic hectometers of water authorized for Almería from the Tajo-Segura transfer. Furthermore, the lack of investment affects regions such as Nacimiento, where essential works are still pending to guarantee supply and economic development.
The opposition representative emphasized that the main hydraulic infrastructures currently being executed in the province largely depend on the Government of Spain and European funds. They stressed that while the State invests in works and mobilizes resources, the Junta limits itself to announcements and propaganda. It was highlighted that Almería concentrates 49% of the Andalusian investment from the Recovery Plan for irrigation, promoted by the central Government, with 174 million euros allocated to projects already underway or completed.
