Driving in reverse is prohibited in Spain, with very limited exceptions such as parking maneuvers or in dead-end streets, and only for a maximum of 15 meters. Performing this on a high-capacity road like the A-7 highway, and for such a considerable distance, poses a serious risk to road safety.
The incident occurred on a stretch of the A-7 in Almería, where a driver, apparently to avoid a traffic jam, decided to drive against the normal flow of traffic for over 400 meters. The driver was seeking to leave the main road via an earlier exit.
Traffic cameras from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) captured the dangerous action, which allowed the Road Safety Unit of the Civil Guard of Almería to identify, locate, and investigate the driver.
This behavior not only endangered the life of the driver but also that of all other road users, given the high speeds typically maintained on highways and the potential for serious accidents.
The investigated driver could face significant legal consequences, including a prison sentence of two to five years, a fine of twelve to 24 months, and the revocation of their driving license for motor vehicles and mopeds for a period of six to ten years.
