The financial institution Cajamar celebrates six decades since the opening of its first office in Almería, solidifying its role as a fundamental pillar for the economic and social development of the province and its agricultural sector.

On April 20, 1966, the then Caja Rural Provincial de Almería, now known as Cajamar, opened its first branch on Méndez Núñez street in the capital. This modest beginning marked the genesis of a visionary initiative that, over time, transformed a small local credit cooperative into the leading rural bank in Spain and one of the country's ten most significant financial entities.
From its origins with three employees to the more than 5,100 professionals who currently make up the Cajamar Cooperative Group, the institution has maintained its founding purpose: to promote the development of rural areas and the progress of people and territories. This commitment has been notably demonstrated in Almería, its home province.

"The fact of being born in a certain place, time, or circumstance sometimes leaves an imprint that defines character, and despite the passage of years, that mark is so strong that it remains indelible."

The establishment of the Caja Rural dates back to June 8, 1963, driven by 29 agricultural cooperatives in Almería seeking their own financial institution. After three years of preparation, the opening of the office at Méndez Núñez number 28 addressed the need of the province of Almería, and particularly its agricultural and cooperative movement, for financial support tailored to the sector's characteristics.
Over the years, Cajamar has supported the transformation of Almería's countryside, overcoming challenges and expanding its activities to all productive sectors of the province. By 1984, it had already consolidated its position as the largest rural bank in Spain, and in 1989, it became the leading financial institution in Almería. Its national expansion began with the opening of branches in the Region of Murcia in 1989 and in Barcelona in 1990, gradually extending throughout Spain.
Currently, Cajamar is the only credit cooperative with a physical presence in all Spanish provinces and autonomous cities, boasting assets exceeding 65 billion euros and nearly 4 million clients. Despite its growth, the institution maintains its roots in Almería and its commitment to economic development and the progress of people and territories, just as it did from day one.
