Representatives from the Popular Party of Almería have highlighted the substantial increase in funding for the University of Almería (UAL), attributing this progress to the management of the Andalusian Government. During a forum held at the Faculty of Education Sciences at UAL, the momentum gained by the academic institution over the past seven years was analyzed.
A party spokesperson emphasized that public universities are an essential engine for the region's development, social cohesion, and future. It was detailed that university funding in Andalusia has grown by 31%, from 1.370 million euros in 2018 to 1.825 million projected for 2026. This increase has directly impacted UAL, which has seen its budget rise from 73 to 98 million euros.
In addition to the budget increase, salary contributions, especially regional supplements for teaching and research staff, have been considered. For the first time, unallocated surpluses can be used for infrastructure and new resources, allowing UAL to access nearly 3.5 million euros for improving facilities such as the public parking, student housing, sports building, and bioclimatic and photovoltaic systems.
In the academic field, the 15-year freeze on new degrees has been reversed. Andalusia has authorized 199 new specializations, 19 of which belong to the University of Almería. These include degrees in Medicine, Physics, Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity, as well as master's degrees in Digital Law, Research and Community Intervention for Transformation and Social Inclusion, History and Visual Culture, and Early Childhood Care. There has also been a 10% increase in Erasmus grants and improvements in university staff conditions.
Equity policies have also been a fundamental pillar, with the freezing of public fees, their elimination for vulnerable groups, the strengthening of scholarships abroad, and the creation of a specific quota to facilitate access for vulnerable individuals to any degree program. In research, UAL has received an investment of 11.7 million euros between 2022 and 2025 for projects, human resources, knowledge transfer, and infrastructure, in addition to support for the Calar Alto Observatory and the creation of the Andalusian Academy of Agriculture based in Almería.
“"The data supports the management of the Andalusian Government in university matters after years of underfunding. Today we can proudly say that we are a benchmark in university investment."
