Almería PSOE criticizes Shelters' closure due to "lack of foresight"

The PSOE councilwoman in the Almería City Council, Lidia Compadre, has criticized the management of the People's Party governing team, which has led to the Civil War Shelters remaining closed to tourism due to "lack of foresight" and "deficient management".

The socialist councilwoman stated that the announcement of the tender for improvement works for the Shelters comes late, as the closure will extend, at least, until November 2026, totaling twenty months of inactivity. Compadre regrets that the City Council presents as an achievement an action that the Socialist Municipal Group had been demanding for two years.
The works, with a budget of 382,800 euros and an execution period of four months, are being tendered after "repeated warnings" from the PSOE about the deterioration of the facilities. The PSOE already warned in March 2024 about "deficiencies in the electrical system, lighting, emergency exits, security cameras, air conditioning, and other essential maintenance elements," warnings that, according to Compadre, "facts demonstrate were fully justified" by the very works now being tendered to renovate ventilation, lighting, fire protection, and communications, in addition to creating new evacuation routes.
Compadre emphasized the importance of explaining why a fundamental tourist infrastructure will remain closed for almost two years and what measures will be taken to compensate for the economic impact. The PSOE had already warned in February of this year about the damage to city center tourism caused by the closure of the Shelters and delays in the Paseo de Almería works, without receiving a response.

"We think it's good that, finally, investment is being made to modernize facilities that have needed comprehensive action for years. What cannot be sold as a success is that the Shelters will remain closed, at least, for twenty months, due to deficient management and the governing team's lack of foresight."

According to PSOE figures, approximately 80,823 visits will have been missed between March 2025 and November 2026. With an average ticket price of 8.92 euros, this represents a loss of tourist activity of 720,941.16 euros. After deducting the municipal fee, affected companies would have lost about 559,295.16 euros in direct revenue.
The PSOE demands that the governing team adopt measures to reduce the economic impact, including a detailed timeline for works and reopening, a support plan for affected tourism businesses and professionals, and a specific tourism promotion strategy to recover lost visits once the facilities reopen.
