The results of the 2022 elections in Almería clearly showed the consolidation of the Popular Party, which secured 6 out of 12 regional deputies with 45.53% of the votes. The PSOE emerged as the second force with three seats and 22.07% of the votes, closely followed by Vox, which also obtained three deputies with 20.72% of the votes. Voter turnout on that occasion reached 55.96%, three points higher than in 2018.
The PP achieved a significant increase in its results, painting most of the province blue, in contrast to the lack of parliamentary representation from other left-wing formations and the disappearance of Ciudadanos. Meanwhile, the PSOE experienced a loss of support, though it maintained its second position, while Vox improved its results and gained an additional deputy.
An analysis of Vox's voting patterns in the province reveals a concentration of its support in municipalities with a notable presence of immigrant populations, particularly from North Africa, and with higher per capita incomes. This trend is observed in localities whose economies are based on intensive greenhouse farming, such as El Ejido, Roquetas de Mar, Adra, and Níjar.
Looking ahead to the upcoming elections, the PP of Almería, led by its current provincial president, will seek to match or exceed previous results, despite recent changes in the provincial leadership. The popular list will be headed by the provincial president of the party, followed by the regional minister of Educational Development and Vocational Training of the Junta de Andalucía. The party has opted for a continuous list, prioritizing current councilors from the Andalusian Government.
The PSOE, for its part, faces the challenge of avoiding being relegated to the third political force in the province. The socialist candidacy will be led by the secretary of Organization of the PSOE of Almería, accompanied by the spokesperson for the municipal group in the Almería City Council and a former regional minister of Agriculture. The list has been renewed, excluding prominent figures with the aim of increasing the three parliamentarians obtained in the previous elections.
Regarding Vox, its president in Almería and regional parliamentarian will once again lead the list. The party sees these elections as an opportunity to reverse current policies and defend the interests of key sectors such as agriculture and livestock. Meanwhile, the coordinator of IU in Almería and candidate for Por Andalucía, has expressed her party's confidence in regaining representation in the Andalusian Parliament for Almería, after more than a decade without securing a seat.
