The town of Vegas del Genil is celebrating its half-century of existence this 2026, marking a significant milestone since its official establishment in 1976. This formation was the result of the union of the neighborhoods of Purchil, Ambroz, and Belicena, a process that has been remembered in a series of commemorative events.
During the celebration events, an emotional tribute was paid to various personalities and institutions that have contributed to the municipality's development. Among those recognized were the pharmacy of Ambroz, a local entrepreneur's pastry shop, a prominent athlete, the Community of Irrigators of the Tarramonta Ditch, and a guitarist. Distinctions were also awarded to a civil servant, who received the title of adopted daughter, and to an honorary councilwoman posthumously. The religious figures of the Virgen de los Dolores de Purchil, the Virgen de los Remedios de Ambroz, and San Marcos de Belicena were named perpetual mayors.
“"Today we celebrate a shared history for half a century, but above all, we celebrate a town project."
A representative from the Provincial Council, present at the event, emphasized that Vegas del Genil is a “young municipality in years, but great in identity,” praising the pride of its residents in their history and their ability to build together. He stressed that the town's growth is a result of unity, collective effort, and a strong sense of belonging, solidifying its position as a benchmark in the metropolitan area of Granada.
Similarly, a representative from the Ministry of Public Works, Territorial Planning and Housing highlighted the evolution of the three united populations in the Vega de Granada over these five decades. She acknowledged the talent and drive of the residents and expressed gratitude to those honored for their contribution to the social and economic development of the Granada municipality.
