The Ministry of Transport will invest at least €40 million to remodel junction 15 of the GR-30 in Armilla, Granada, aiming to fix a critical metropolitan traffic point.
The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has confirmed that the Ministry is working on short-term solutions to alleviate congestion at the Armilla link with the GR-30. During an institutional visit to the Armilla City Council, traffic difficulties at the connection between Avenida Fernando de los Ríos and the GR-30 were discussed, an area considered one of the main hotspots for metropolitan traffic in Granada.
It is estimated that the ring road handles up to 100,000 vehicles daily. The mayor of Armilla, Loli Cañavate, presented the problem affecting thousands of citizens commuting to and from Armilla, the provincial capital, the Health Technology Park (PTS), the Nevada Shopping center, the Albán Commercial Park, and other municipalities in the Metropolitan Area. The situation has worsened in recent years, partly due to the construction of the shopping center.
The minister toured the area and highlighted the upcoming implementation of an intelligent traffic light system, which is nearing completion and expected to be operational soon. These immediate measures will also include artificial intelligence systems for traffic management, through a contract covering both project drafting and construction execution, aimed at optimizing traffic flow and reducing waiting times.
In parallel, the Ministry is advancing a structural solution. This year, it plans to tender the service contract for drafting the specific remodeling project for junction 15 of the GR-30, a targeted action for Armilla to improve traffic fluidity, enhance road safety, and increase the functionality of this strategic access point. The estimated investment for this future project exceeds 40 million euros.
Additionally, the Ministry has awarded the preliminary study for improvements to the GR-30, a document that will analyze the accessibility and mobility of the entire metropolitan area, including the needs of Armilla and its connection to the ring road.

"It was very important for Armilla that the minister could see firsthand the reality that thousands of people experience every day at this access point to our city and the entire metropolitan area. We appreciate his sensitivity and the clear commitment he has conveyed to Armilla."

"We have been demanding solutions for one of the main mobility problems in our city for a long time, and today we can say that we are beginning to see a clear roadmap. The immediate actions and the planning of a definitive solution make us believe that the response to this metropolitan traffic blackspot is getting closer."
