The acting Minister of Development, Territorial Planning, and Housing, Rocío Díaz, presented this new enclave, described as "a singular space," alongside the mayoress of Las Gabias, Merinda Sádaba, and the mayor of Churriana de la Vega, Antonio Narváez. This location utilizes the structure of the new bridge over the Dílar river to create a meeting point with "unbeatable views of the Vega and Sierra Nevada."
During the event, Díaz unveiled a commemorative plaque next to tracks from the old tramway that connected Granada and Las Gabias, discovered during the works. The minister emphasized that this space, equipped with pergolas, benches, and fountains, represents "a look at the past of the Vega" and the "integration of its heritage and history," bridging "two eras": that of the tramway and the 21st-century Metro.
The viewpoint plaza, accessible from the La Gloria interchange (which includes the metro stop, bus services, and a park-and-ride facility), joins the route of the southern extension of the Granada Metro. This project, managed by the Public Works Agency of the Junta, shares much of its path with the former Line 4 of the tramway.
The civil works for the southern extension are nearly complete, pending final urbanization touches and the definitive phase of installations and railway signaling. The total investment amounts to 130 million euros. Key activities until August focus on the execution of energy, communication, ticketing, and operational support systems, with 76% progress.
Catenary poles are 100% installed, and the overhead contact line has been completed up to the new bridge. Traction electrical substations are now energized, and the urbanization of the Secondary Control Post in Las Gabias is being finalized. Systems such as the Tetra radio and ticketing are advancing, and signaling engineering is well underway.
The Southern Extension, co-financed with European Next Generation funds, spans 4.6 kilometers with seven stops in Armilla, Churriana de la Vega, and Las Gabias. The event was also attended by the Junta's delegate in Granada, Antonio Granados, and the managing director of the Public Works Agency, José María Rivera.
