Chauchina is going through a period of great economic activity, boosted by the establishment of hundreds of companies in its industrial park, strategically located opposite Granada Airport. The mayor, Jesús Fernández, emphasizes this dynamism, pointing out that the town has become a nerve center for the Vega region.
With 600 registered companies for a population of 5,800 inhabitants, Chauchina shows growth extending beyond the economic sphere, encompassing social and cultural aspects as well. The mayor highlights the good relationship with the airport, promoting guided tours for seniors and the implementation of new supermarket models like Mercadona, in addition to the expansion of headquarters such as Berner.
Fernández also addressed the management of historical floods, mentioning the cleaning and conditioning of riverbeds like the Arroyo Salado to prevent inundations, recalling the one that occurred in November 2024. Neighborly collaboration is highlighted as key in these situations.
“"I cannot conceive of Granada not being connected, the capital, to the airport by metro"
One of the municipality's main demands is the metro connection between the capital and the airport, a request being made to the Provincial Council and the Regional Government of Andalusia. The mayor proposes the creation of a large parking area in Chauchina to facilitate metro access for residents of adjacent towns.
Regarding municipal projects, progress is being made on the construction of a multi-purpose hall, for which tenders have already been issued, and the open-air auditorium has been improved, a space next to a lake that enhances the summer cultural offerings. Work on the sports complex and the restoration of the shrine of the Virgen del Espino, an important tourist attraction, are also highlighted.
The mayor emphasizes the importance of culture and education to prevent Chauchina from becoming a dormitory town, promoting summer activities such as cinema, trips, and shows. The Virgen del Espino, whose apparition was commemorated this year marking its 120th anniversary, attracts thousands of visitors on April 9th.
Fernández also highlights the political unity in the town council, where the four political forces collaborate as neighbors for the good of the municipality. The mayor's approachability is evident in his office, which is always open to address citizen proposals and complaints.
Visitors are invited to explore Romilla la Nueva for its coolness and views, and the Torre de Roma, a cultural heritage site where Federico García Lorca is said to have walked. The municipality, which has doubled its population in 10 years, aims to maintain its village identity despite growth.
The Andalusian Music Festival, celebrating its 38th anniversary, will take place on July 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the underground auditorium, offering a unique acoustic experience.
