The Palma del Río City Council reminds its residents of the importance of adopting preventive measures against leishmaniasis, a disease that can affect people and is transmitted by the bite of the sandfly, an insect whose activity is concentrated at dusk and during the night.
The campaign aims to enhance public information and awareness, detailing key preventive measures and how to reduce places where sandflies can shelter and reproduce.
Unlike mosquitoes, sandflies do not breed in water but in areas with decomposing organic matter, debris, damp spaces, and poorly ventilated locations. Therefore, citizen collaboration is essential. Recommendations include removing dry leaves and accumulated pruning waste, eliminating debris, avoiding humidity, and keeping corrals, storage areas, and basements clean and well-ventilated.
To protect against bites during the insect's peak activity hours, it is advisable to wear long-sleeved, light-colored clothing, apply authorized repellents, install mosquito nets on doors and windows, and avoid outdoor activities without protection.
For any doubts or the appearance of symptoms compatible with the disease, it is recommended to visit a health center. The City Council thanks the public for their cooperation, reminding them that maintaining clean spaces helps reduce the presence of sandflies and protect collective health.
