The accident occurred after 9:30 PM when one of the carriages of the tourist train, which was running the Tapas and Cocktail Route, overturned for reasons yet to be clarified. Sources from the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters of Malaga (CPB) reported that the injured include nine adults and nine minors between the ages of 5 and 17, although the Civil Guard lowers the figure to eleven. All were attended by paramedics and transferred to hospitals, with none in serious condition.
A unit from the Coín CPB was dispatched to the scene to provide first aid and assistance in stabilizing the overturned carriage. Municipal sources indicated that the causes of the incident are being investigated, with a possible brake failure being considered. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic, with passengers shouting that "they could have died," and highlighted the rapid response of neighbors to assist the occupants before the emergency services arrived.
Journalist Marc Gómez, a resident of Cártama, described how he and his girlfriend, a nurse, went to provide help. "The carriage practically fell on some of them," he recounted, adding that "the scare was very big. They kept saying they could have died. There was blood on the ground, broken glass..." Some passengers were temporarily trapped, while others suffered injuries when parts of the carriage structure fell on them. Makeshift slings were created with t-shirts for young people with arm injuries, and an elderly woman with a nosebleed was attended to.
The witness also highlighted the quick neighborhood reaction and the assistance from the manager of the Marisqueo restaurant, who provided material to control bleeding and ice. After the arrival of the Local Police and Firefighters, followed by the Civil Guard and a 061 ambulance, the situation was brought under control.
The accident has led to the suspension of the tourist train service, which was part of the XII Tapas and Cocktail Route in Cártama, an initiative organized by the City Council to boost the local economy and promote the municipality's gastronomy.
