The proposal, which received support from the PP and Vox, the abstention of the PSOE, and the vote against from Con Andalucía, highlights the need for a structural solution to the recurring water problems in the area, including both floods and prolonged periods of drought.
According to the motion, the Cerro Blanco dam would allow effective regulation of the flows of the río Grande, reducing the risk of floods and significantly increasing water storage capacity. This would ensure supply for both human consumption and agricultural and livestock activities in the region.
The execution of the Cerro Blanco dam would represent a “decisive advance” in the water security of the province of Málaga, while reinforcing the protection of the population, infrastructure, and economic fabric of Guadalhorce.
The approved agreement urges the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge to prioritize this project, establishing a clear timeline with defined deadlines and necessary funding. It is emphasized that the dam's development must be carried out with strict respect for environmental regulations and the conservation of river ecosystems.
Furthermore, the initiative seeks to guarantee water supply to the municipalities in the area of influence and maintain supply to agricultural operations currently dependent on the río Grande, thus contributing to the sustainability of the primary sector and territorial balance in the province of Málaga.
