The foundation work for the future 'Alberto Díaz' Sports Pavilion has concluded, and the awarded company has begun installing the large metal structure that will serve as the framework for the venue. This project, one of the municipality's most significant sporting initiatives, involves an investment of 2.7 million euros from the City Council.
The Councilor for Sports, Sergio Cortés, along with municipal technicians, has supervised the development of the works. The pavilion, named 'Alberto Díaz' in honor of the player, will be specifically dedicated to basketball.
The Malaga-based company A7GR Servicios y Obras was awarded the contract last March for 2,264,676.54 euros (including VAT), with co-financing from the City Council and the Provincial Council of Malaga. The venue is being built on a total area of nearly 3,900 square meters, with over 1,700 dedicated to the main building.
The central court will measure 45 by 24 meters, allowing for three transversal and one longitudinal court, adhering to Andalusian sports regulations. It will feature dividing curtains, separate circulation areas for athletes and the public, changing rooms, auxiliary spaces for play, and specific access points for players, technical staff, and spectators. The fixed seating will accommodate approximately 350 people, with the possibility of adding temporary seating, and there will be an outdoor parking area with 25 spaces, including accessible spots and one with an electric charging point, as well as a bicycle zone.
The architectural design integrates the building into the sports environment, with finishes in concrete, metal sheeting, and glass, all on a single functional floor. Specifically, the plot is located between Avenida Santa Clara and Calle Santa Bárbara, with pedestrian access from the main streets and vehicular access via Calle Santa Bárbara, maintaining connectivity with the neighborhood's road network and facilitating access for users and the public.
This new facility is envisioned as a benchmark space for local basketball clubs and to strengthen the existing agreement with Unicaja, which designates Alhaurín de la Torre as a host location for matches of its U22 youth team.
As a tribute to Alberto Díaz, his silhouette, based on a photograph chosen by himself, will be prominently displayed on the exterior of the building, reinforcing the project's connection to the values of sport and youth development. This will be the fourth covered sports pavilion in the municipality, following those in El Limón and Blas Infante.
