The municipality has been included by the regional administration in the alert areas system for the circulation of this virus, leading to reinforced controls and preventive measures. The installed devices allow for regular specimen collection for analysis, aiming to identify present species and check for virus circulation among mosquito populations.
This initiative, part of the surveillance and prevention measures against the West Nile Virus, is particularly important in areas alerted due to the detection of carrier mosquitoes within 1.5 kilometers of populated areas. According to the Department of Environment and Health, this classification necessitates enhanced controls but does not indicate any human transmission of the virus in Alhaurín de la Torre, where no cases have been confirmed to date.
The installation and monitoring of these traps complement other actions such as fumigation efforts, control of potential larval breeding sites, and inspections in areas conducive to mosquito proliferation. The City Council will continue collaborating with the Junta de Andalucía and technical and health services to prevent risks and protect public health.
The council emphasizes the importance of citizen cooperation, reminding residents to avoid water accumulation in patios, terraces, gardens, and plots, as these can become breeding grounds for these insects.
