The province of Almería has seen shifts in its battle against depopulation, with three municipalities successfully exiting the risk list, while two new localities have been added, maintaining a total of 75 towns in this situation.

The Ministry of Justice, Local Administration and Public Function of the Junta de Andalucía has released the latest annual update of the Strategy against the Demographic Challenge, revealing that the number of Andalusian municipalities at risk of depopulation has decreased from 480 in 2025 to 470 currently. This positive balance at the regional level contrasts with the situation in Almería, where the reduction has been smaller, going from 76 to 75 at-risk municipalities, solidifying its position as the second Andalusian province with the highest number of affected localities, only surpassed by Granada with 113.
The report, presented to the Governing Council on Wednesday, April 8, details that the departure of three towns from the list and the inclusion of two new ones have shaped the dynamic in Almería. Criteria for determining depopulation risk include a population density below 20 inhabitants per square kilometer, negative demographic growth, aging exceeding 200%, negative migratory rate, average population age above 50 years, a masculinity ratio above 105%, and an unemployment rate exceeding 20.3%.
The localities of Alhabia, Rioja, and Pechina have managed to reverse their situation and have been removed from the list of at-risk municipalities. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics, Alhabia increased from 725 to 743 inhabitants between 2024 and 2025; Pechina now has 4,552 inhabitants compared to 4,463 the previous year; and Rioja has increased its population by 20, reaching 1,609. Conversely, Tíjola and Huécija are the two new municipalities that have been added to the risk list.
Among the 75 Almerian municipalities at risk, 22 are classified as high priority, meeting between seven and nine of the established criteria. These include Albanchez, Alboloduy, Alcóntar, Alcudia de Monteagud, Bacares, Beires, Benitagla, Benizalón, Bentarique, Canjáyar, Castro de Filabres, Cóbdar, Líjar, María, Ohanes, Oria, Padules, Paterna del Río, Rágol, Sierro, Las Tres Villas, and Velefique. Another 32 are at medium risk and 21 at low risk, covering a wide geography of the province.
