The San Miguel festival, celebrated on September 29, is intrinsically linked to this unique popular custom primarily involving the municipality's youngest residents. The tradition involves hollowing out and decorating melons, carving various designs and shapes such as stars, moons, or geometric patterns into their rinds to turn them into lanterns.
Historically, a candle was placed inside these decorated melons to illuminate the carved figures in the evening. This year, the celebration will take place on Saturday, September 26, with a grand children's parade starting at 7:30 PM from the Residential Center for the Elderly.
Participants can collect melons at the Carcabuey Tourist Office starting Tuesday, September 22. Each child is encouraged to prepare their own design to display during the procession through the town's streets, concluding at the Plaza de España.
The Carcabuey City Council promotes this festival as a way to keep a manifestation of popular heritage alive, ensuring its transmission across generations and involving the youngest members of the community.
