Mayor Marino Aguilera and the Councillor for Public Works and Services, Mercedes Flores, have presented the ongoing interventions at the Alcalá la Real municipal cemetery. These works are focused on optimizing access from Iberoamérica Avenue and the complete rehabilitation of the main facade of the enclosure.
“"The current access was in a precarious state, the result of unplanned urban development that has deteriorated the road over the years."
The works, initially scheduled for 2024 and 2025 under the Agricultural Employment Promotion Plan (PFEA), had to be postponed due to the prioritization of the hospital wall collapse. The mayor also emphasized the urgent need to intervene on the cemetery's facade, built in 1949 on clay soil that has historically presented stability problems. Recent heavy rains have caused visible movements, with noticeable cracks and some sections already having collapsed.
Councillor Flores detailed that the works, which began last Monday, the 6th, cover an initial section of approximately 120 meters of road and 55 meters of sidewalk. The initial investment amounts to 345,000 euros, to which personnel costs and the reconstruction of the facade will be added, bringing the total estimated cost to around 500,000 euros. During the construction period, alternative accesses to the cemetery will be enabled, including a side entrance and a rear access, to ensure service, especially on high-traffic dates such as All Saints' Day.
