Around thirty Greenpeace activists unfurled several banners, totaling over 300 square meters, from the cables of the Barqueta bridge in Seville this Saturday. Under the slogan "Aznalcóllar, not again", the environmental organization demands the precautionary suspension of the reopening of the Los Frailes (Aznalcóllar) and Cobre Las Cruces (La Algaba) mines, warning of the danger to the river and its ecosystem.
The protest action, which was brief and removed around 10:11 AM, strategically coincided with the first race of the Rowing World Cup in the Andalusian capital, aiming to attract international attention. The organization assures that the display did not hinder the regattas.
Greenpeace denounces that the mining projects authorized by the Regional Government of Andalusia pose "a serious threat to people's health and ecosystems". According to environmentalists, the reopening of Aznalcóllar by Grupo México would involve the discharge of over 85 billion liters of heavy metal-laden water over 18 years through a 30-kilometer pipeline to the estuary. This would be compounded by another 32 billion liters over 14 years from the activity at Cobre Las Cruces.
“"While the Regional Government of Andalusia and the Seville City Council loudly promote the benefits of the Guadalquivir for sporting events, they are signing its death sentence by approving these discharges."
The organization bases its protest on scientific reports from the Universities of Seville, Cádiz, and Granada, which have already detected levels of lead and arsenic above permitted limits in locally consumed species such as albures or galeras. They warn that the river's hydrological dynamics prevent substances like chromium, lead, or mercury from reaching the sea, as the Alcalá del Río dam and the "salt plug" at the estuary act as barriers that accumulate these pollutants in the estuary's mud, directly threatening Doñana and the region's fishing and agricultural sectors. Therefore, they demand an immediate moratorium and the creation of an independent expert committee.
