Linares Unveils Innovative 'Biotechnological Tree' for Clean Energy Generation

The Mobilete project, driven by the University of Jaén, transforms industrial and mining waste into a renewable energy source on campus.

The Linares Scientific-Technological Campus has inaugurated the Mobilete project, a unique 'biotechnological tree' structure that utilizes industrial and mining scrap materials to generate clean energy, fostering sustainability and the circular economy.

The initiative, presented by the University of Jaén's leadership, represents a practical application of university knowledge, demonstrating the institution's commitment to building a more sustainable future. This project is based on four essential pillars: the circular economy, by giving a second life to scrap materials; energy independence, contributing to exceeding 30% renewable self-generation; promoting a healthy university, creating outdoor workspaces for idea exchange; and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.

"For the UJA, the Mobilete project is perfectly aligned with several of the objectives we pursue in the field of sustainability and the development of new infrastructures. It is not simply a new construction, but the materialization of a vision: to transform our campuses into greener, more functional, and more inspiring spaces."

the University of Jaén's leadership
The university's leadership emphasized that the excellence of the Engineering Schools must be accompanied by an environment that is sustainable, intelligent, and human. The Mobilete project is conceived as the beginning of a line of action expected to grow thanks to the talent of researchers.
Among the project's promoters are researchers from the University of Jaén, who have detailed that one of the main objectives is to study the behavior of bifacial photovoltaic modules using artificial intelligence techniques. These modules are capable of capturing solar radiation from both sides, allowing for a deeper analysis of their efficiency, especially the less-studied rear side.
The structure supporting the photovoltaic modules has been designed under the concept of a circular economy, reusing materials previously used for mine timbering in the Linares region. This structure, which was located at the former Linares Higher Polytechnic School, has been repurposed. Additionally, the project has utilized an underused space on campus, equipping it with internet and electrification so that students and professors can charge devices and work outdoors. It is anticipated that climbing plants will colonize the structure, creating a more pleasant and functional environment.
The Mobilete project, fully titled 'Modeling the behavior of bifacial photovoltaic modules integrated into “biotechnological trees” using Artificial Intelligence techniques,' is part of the call for Ecological Transition and Digital Transition Projects. It has been developed by two research groups from the University of Jaén, specializing in solar photovoltaic energy and artificial intelligence, with the collaboration of a third architecture group from the University of Málaga. The facilities, located on the Jaén (with recycled olive mill material) and Linares campuses, include monitoring systems to analyze their performance over several years, aiming to improve the quality of university spaces.
