Thousands of people gathered in the Plaza de la Constitución for the inaugural ceremony and the procession to the Castle of Cortegana, marking the start of an edition that will transform the town into a medieval setting until next Sunday, August 9th.
The inauguration was attended by María del Mar Martín, mayor of Cortegana; José Manuel Zamora, vice-president of the Provincial Council of Huelva; and Pastora Giménez, territorial delegate for Culture, Historical Heritage, and Sports of the Junta de Andalucía in Huelva, among other authorities.
The premiere of the show 'Un corazón medieval' (A Medieval Heart) brought the theme 'La Captura del Eclipse' to life, narrating a prophecy about an eternal darkness threatening the town. Characters like the astronomer, the healer, and the alchemist guided the audience through a story of hope and unity, culminating in a spell that saved Cortegana.
The mayor highlighted the commitment to the event's growth, featuring more street entertainment, music, and shows. She emphasized the community's support, which has established the Festival as a Fiesta of Tourist Interest in Andalusia and the oldest in the autonomous community.
Pastora Giménez emphasized the union of material and intangible heritage, congratulating the City Council and wishing attendees a wonderful experience. Manuela Cayuela, vice-president of the Provincial Council, noted the Festival as a visitor attraction and a source of pride for Cortegana's heritage.
José Enrique Borrallo, Director General of Protected Natural Spaces of Andalusia, recognized the Festival's importance as a showcase for Cortegana and the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, highlighting its role in municipal development.
The program includes an increase in street entertainment, parades, performances, and itinerant shows. Music and dance are also reinforced, with local productions by the theater group Corticata and a medieval music concert by Schola Cantorum Paradisi Portae.
The International Sierra Celta Festival will feature performances by BackWest, Luneris, The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Triquel, and Aérokorda, reinforcing its international character.
