Jannik Sinner's return to the clay courts of Madrid, two years later, was not an easy ride. The Italian had to dig deep to overcome a combative Benjamin Bonzi in a match that lasted over two hours. Despite expectations, the world number one faced an inspired opponent who challenged him from the outset.
The first set was particularly challenging for Sinner. Despite having break point opportunities, he failed to convert them, while Bonzi, with a disciplined and effective game, pushed the set to a tie-break. In the tie-break, the Frenchman proved superior, capitalizing on an early 'mini break' and fending off a set point against him to ultimately claim the set 7-6.
However, Sinner's reaction was swift. In the second set, the Italian displayed a much more solid and effective performance, securing two service breaks and winning five consecutive games to level the match with a commanding 6-1. The match dynamic shifted completely, and the Manolo Santana court, which was full for the first time in the tournament, witnessed the world number one's dominance.
In the deciding set, although Bonzi attempted to resist, even with physical issues in his left shoulder that required medical attention, Sinner maintained his high level. The Italian secured a crucial break (3-2) and, supported by a consistent serve, closed out the match 6-4. His next opponent in the third round will be Danish player Elmer Moller.
